Windows Server 2003 and 2008 Web Edition has for primary purpose to serve as web hosting applications. This version can also be accessed via Remote Desktop Protocol. Web edition is very well integrated with Internet Information Services (IIS) and the .NET framework. It allows customers to rapidly serve many different web applications.
There are some limits for the Web Edition. It only comes in a 32 Bit version and it only supports one physical processor and a maximum of 2 GB of memory (ram). It does not support AD (active directory) or the full version of the Microsoft SQL database system. It does support SQL Server Express edition. Last thing to note is that Microsoft Windows Media is not supported on the Web edition.
Windows Server 2003 or 2008 Standard Edition features all the tools of the microsoft server systems. It can act as a web server, file server, print server, application (IIS, .NET) server, emailing services, streaming and much more.
The Standard Edition also has great hardware support. It can take up to 4 physical processors in both the 32 and 64 bit environments. For 32 bit, up to 4 GB of ram is supported. For 64 bit, you can install as much as 32 GB of ram. It is geared towards the small to medium businesses.
Windows Server 2003 or 2008 Enterprise Edition has even increased hardware support. You can install up to 8 physical processors with it and up to 64 GB of memory on the 32 bit version. For the 64 bit version, you can go up to 2 TB of memory.
It fully supports Microsoft Active Directory. It expands the SQL features as well providing support for the workgroup versions of SQL Server. This is for the more powerful Dedicated Hosting Solution.
